The process of working with clay captivates my imagination. I find it fascinating that something so elemental can be formed into a beautiful but functional object. The ordinary becomes extraordinary.
Each piece of my functional ceramics is individually hand crafted and specifically designed for ease of use and beauty. The variety of surfaces reflects my fascination with ceramic process. The slip work reflects the influence of Asian brushwork, the layering of glazes show my love of color and curiosity with how glazes interact with one another. A new interest in lithography allows me to play with the juxtaposition of images as decoration while adding touches of glaze accent. Most of the work is then fired in a soda kiln.
The soda firing process is where the magic comes in. A soda ash and water mixture is sprayed into the kiln towards the end of the firing. Each adjustment to the fuel or air supply during the firing is made through a conscious decision based on previous firing experience and a willingness to experiment with the outcome. The results are unique pieces that display an individual personality and cannot be replicated exactly from firing to firing.
